Taru Villas – The Muse is a classy and appealing alternative on the sought-after southern Bentota coastal strip which offers a small selection of charming boutique hotels in proximity. Overlooking a beautiful lush garden, with the beach just through the trees, this nine-bedroom boutique hotel that represents everything Taru Villas stands for – charm, thoughtful and original design, praiseworthy food and attentive service.
The nine bedrooms at Taru Villas – The Muse come in five Standard rooms and four Deluxe rooms. All rooms are air-conditioned and individually designed featuring king-sized beds and complimenting furniture including cupboards and writing desks. All rooms also have overhead fans, cable TV, safes, mini-fridges and ensuite bathrooms with h/w showers.
The menu is enticing, and dishes fuse east and west in an entirely original way – think tuna hot dogs, fried snake gourd and smoked seer fish. The Sri Lankan curries are superb, whether you have the full spread for dinner or a smaller selection with milk rice, hoppers or string hoppers for breakfast. Other standouts were the crab rice (big enough for two), the pumpkin ravioli and the homemade coconut ice cream. Staff take your dinner orders in advance, as well as your choice of wine to ensure it’s the right temperature for when you sit down to have your meal. An unbeatable place for sundowners is the beach, ogling the ocean from canvas deck chairs.
Taru Villas’ staff are master’s in hospitality. They know their clients, and this comes across in their delicate balance of discretion and attentiveness. You’re extremely well looked after, and nothing is too much trouble. The hotel neatly maintains a strip of beach, and has staff stationed there all day, arranging sun loungers and deck chairs, and proffering towels and chilled drinks from cool boxes. Most guests drift between the swimming pool, the beach and their rooms, though there’s also a two-room spa that’s shared with neighbouring sister-hotel, Rock Villa.
