The Hotel
Claughton House, designed by Geoffrey Bawa, is an example of intelligent architecture enhancing the beauty of its environment. A unique, multi terraced living space has been created to enjoy one of the best vistas in southern Sri Lanka: a distant harbour bobbing with small fishing boats, swaying coconut palms, an inviting pool, white sand and the alluring waters of the Indian Ocean. There are five bedrooms, three in the main house all with garden and ocean views and a further two towards the rear of the house accessed via a covered walkway. All bedrooms are en-suite and three have secluded tropical spaces with outdoor showers. Set in the rocks on a lower level of the immaculate lawn, lies the pool terrace, with views out to sea, complete with BBQ and pool side dining pavilion, day bed and sun loungers. Overlooking the surf break, it provides the perfect spot to unwind and recharge.
Experience at the Claughton House
The master bedroom is the most spacious of all the five rooms with an abstract layout keeping with the theme of the villa. The king-sized bed sits snugly in the centre overlooking the ocean from the floor-to-ceiling doorways. The white interiors speak to the colonial aesthetics of the villa and the air-conditioned bedroom will soon feel like a home away from home. The en-suite bathroom is fitted with a natural stone bathtub for tranquil baths. The four guest bedrooms are furnished with either single beds or a double bed, sporting a similar whitewashed design and open doorways to allow for the fresh breeze and lighting to flood the rooms. The rooms are air-conditioned and have en-suite bathrooms as well.
There are several dining options at Claughton House and all of them are either partially or fully outdoors so you can make the most of your gorgeous surroundings. There is an alfresco dining area beside the pool, a smaller breakfast area out on the gardens, and another dining area upstairs with lavish and sprawling vistas of the region. The kitchen is a modern space with state-of-the-art amenities and facilities for guests. You can either choose to cook themselves or request the chef to prepare your meals.
Take in the spectacular ocean views from the open-sided dining room and living room, which opens out to the gardens. Relax on a sun lounge by the swimming pool or at the pavilion, which looks out to see and is perfect for yoga or quiet contemplation. There is a BBQ area by the poolside as well as a dining pavilion. Claughton House has a fully-equipped modern kitchen. Other villa facilities include laundry service and free Wi-Fi. Yoga and relaxing massages are available on request.
